WHATS IN IS DESPAIR

His eyes closed finally and he drifted off into an uncomfortable slumber. The fire was warm against his skin and the chair was comfortable underneath him, yet despite this he was still restless. He had been for over a week now, never sleeping for hours at a time and when he finally did sleep it was disturbed in some way. There was nothing wrong with him physically and if you asked him then he would tell you that there was nothing wrong with him mentally either. The truth was however, one did not simply become an insomniac merely on whims. No, there was always something that forced the change, the only problem with Kor was that he was unsure what it was. It irritated him how he almost always fell asleep in the common room, only to wake up an hour or so later and still feel endlessly tired. It was not an enjoyable experience for anyone involved.

Eccentric dreams plauged his sleep, bright colours and strange creatures lurked within his dreams and fitted together so fluidly that it was hard to find the contrast. Monsters did not lurk upon bright colours, so why did it seem so natural in the dream? There must've been a reason for that but he would sooner die than go ask the Divination teacher to explain his dreams. Koryn would never be quite that desperate. In his sleep he stirred restlessly, feeling himself close to wakefulness, but he couldn't let himself wake, not when he'd so shortly gone to sleep. It was never something he could prevent and so it was with a look of pure frustration that his eyes were forced open once more.

A sigh of annoyance was breathed through his pursed lips and he adopted a brooding look on his face, staring into the fire as if something within it would quench the tiredness from his veins. Something was wrong. It was the only conclusion he could draw for he was not naturally an insomniac and it was only recently that he had turned into one. Perhaps he could get someone to make him up a sleeping potion, or at least something that could draw he fatigue off him before classes, he was not coping. He was falling asleep in class which inevitably meant that he was falling behind and that would not do.

Kor heaved himself to his feet, he walked around the common room and ran his hands through his hair once more. Holding them there as if he was distressed or annoyed at something. Then with a final sigh he sat back in the armchair by the fire, his face was still brooding as he stared into the flames.

The sixth year girl's dormitory was silent, save for the light scratching of pencil on paper, and the occasional muted sharpening of the said pencil. Lucy, sitting in the window seat near her bed, was the only girl in the room that was awake, and had decided to take advantage of the silence to finish her drawing of the view from the Ravenclaw Tower - a project that was taking her quite a while, and was already at the one week point. She had wanted to send the picture home earlier - being no good at photography, doubled by the fact that she didn't have a camera - so that her family would know what she was talking about in her letters, but it seemed that would be a little longer in the coming. The girl continued to sketch, letting her mind wander. They had received yet another textbook in a class, and after flipping through it, she had come to the conclusion that she was in trouble. It was a higher level textbook, and many of the words that she had simply glanced at already looked like words that they obviously weren't. It was already annoying enough that she had to get permission to use a spell-check quill in class, but now, it seemed as though that wouldn't matter. She had learned not to really care about being dyslexic before, but now, it seemed to be rearing its ugly head. Constantly.

Letting out a long breath, the girl set down her pencil, and the drawing that she was working on. It was no use trying to finish up the details on a sketch when she was distracted; it would get messed up, and no amount of erasing would fix it, and starting over was not a pleasant perspective to look upon. Lucy stood, and stretched for a moment, looking around the dormitory. It was a rather nice place, and peaceful in the mornings, but sometimes - when everyone was awake and in the same room at once, and even worse when simply one of them (when it was more, the entire factor tripled) was in a bad mood - it got almost unbearably crowded, especially for people - like her - who didn't like crowds. She preferred it when the others were asleep, but for some reason, the silence seemed to swamp in, almost suffocating her. For a brief moment, the sixth year was dizzy, before tugging on a pair of socks - she didn't plan to leave the Ravenclaw Tower yet - and quickly going into the hallway.

Once again, the strange silence felt crushing. There was no noise in the hall; it was as though the entire place was empty, leaving in an unexpected evacuation that everyone had heard about except her - but that was silly. Her roommates were still there. But even with that thought, Lucy had to put her hands on her knees, and breathe slowly to bring her sudden panic back under control. It had been a while since she had a panic attack; she had forgotten how sudden and consuming they were, though this one hadn't had anything that she noticed leading up to, or causing, it. Taking in a huge, shuddering breath, she smoothed down the front of her pajama pants - they were very comfortable, if slightly undignified, which she tended to ignore; after all, there was no point in changing into her school clothes right at this moment - and continued down the hall, to the stairs that lead to the common room.

The girl quickly went down the stairs, hoping that the larger area of the common room would help her shrug off the constricted feeling both the dormitory and the corridor (the steps weren't much better, either), and stopped as she reached the bottom, once again taking slow breaths. It was much better, especially with the fire crackling quietly; it broke the uneasy silence quite effectively. Rubbing her eyes for a moment - she hadn't noticed that she felt a bit tired - she suddenly noticed that she wasn't the only one in the common room. For a brief second, Lucy felt nervous, remembering how still everything had seemed - why would someone be there, when everything was so empty? - before she mentally shook her head, resisting the urge to laugh at how ridiculous the thought was. Of course people would be there. She was just paranoid. The sixth year took a careful step forward, uncertain on whether the person wanted to be alone or not. "Hello?" She said softly, and suddenly - though she wasn't quite sure why - wished that she had thought to change out of her pajamas.

The fire crackled lazily to itself as he stared into the dense flames, the orange glow warmed his pale skin slightly and his hands began to relax on his knees, the tension that had been stung through his body seemed to seep away slowly. Kor tried to breath deeply, hoping that maybe that would help him achieve drowsiness but though he was starting to feel calmer and more relaxed he could still not achieve the sleep that he desired. Muttering a few curses to himself he ran his hands through his hair in the habitual movement that often claimed him. It wasn't a need to impress anyone that made him do that but simply that he had done it so often it now became something he didn't even realize he was doing it.

Suddenly a voice interrupted his reverie and he jumped slightly, more startled than suprise. He turned his head and blinked slightly, he knew that girl - Lucy Gallagher. She was in the same year as him and in a fair few of his classes, although what she was doing awake at this time of the night escaped him. "Hello, why are you awake?" He knew that the way his question was posed was quite blunt and maybe considered rude, but he had not slept in a while and so being nice and polite was beyond him at the moment.

OOC; crap post, i'm sorry.

For a moment, Lucy stared at the other teenager in the room, the shadows caused by the fireplace playing tricks on her not-too-alert mind. But, with a mental click, she recognized him - Koryn Delane. She didn't know him very well - though they were in the same grade - but at least it wasn't someone (or something) insane, or one of the ghosts up to their tricks (namely Peeves, who she had heard had the tendency to play pranks that either embarrassed someone, scared them out of their wits, or both; she personally hadn't experienced that in her years, and was glad from some of the horror stories that people had told her). Common sense, one, paranoia caused by an over-active imagination, zero. So caught up was the sixth year in her thoughts, she didn't realize that Koryn had said anything until he finished, and she quickly thought back to try and remember what he said.

It was a good question; she didn't really know why she was awake. It was partly school problems, of course, but that normally wasn't enough to keep her awake and continue drawing late into the night when it was nearly impossible to see (her mother had told her numerous times that the habit would ruin her eyes, and she'd end up needing glasses even more than her Grandfather did). Blinking for a moment, Lucy realized exactly how tired she really must be; she didn't know how much time had passed when she was thinking over a rather simply question with unneeded depth, and hopefully it hadn't been long enough to make it seem like she wasn't going to answer, which would make for more awkward conversation, and probably leading her to apologizing over a hundred times before she finally fled back to the dormitory.

"I don't know." She shrugged slightly, also shuddering as she tried to repress the strange feeling of claustrophobia that had come over her when she had looked around the silent dorm before finally coming (rather fleeing) down to the Common Room. "Just couldn't sleep." That was true enough (seeing as she truly had no reason for being up at whatever-time-it-was), but as she thought about it, she wasn't the only person awake at untimely hours with, apparently, nothing to do - such as homework; she had seen more than one person staying up late, if not all night, to finish essays (the amount of essays that the professors gave to the older students as they moved along was more than just a little annoying), or just regular work. "What about you?"
